Real per-guest pricing for San Diego wedding catering in 2026 — from La Jolla estate dinners to Rancho Santa Fe receptions. What drives the number, where couples overspend, and how to budget without cutting the food.
The honest 2026 range for San Diego wedding catering
San Diego wedding catering in 2026 lands between $85 and $225 per guest, food-and-service, before rentals and bar. That's the whole market — taco cart to Michelin-adjacent plated dinners on a bluff in Del Mar.
Our own San Diego wedding catering pricing sits in three tiers. Wood-Fired BBQ buffet starts at $65 per guest. Family-style plated runs $95 to $135. The Steakhouse Experience — bone-in ribeyes, filet and lobster, prime rib carved tableside — runs $145 to $195 per guest.
What actually moves the price
Protein choice is 40% of the number. Brisket, pulled pork, and mesquite chicken cost half of filet, prime rib, and lobster tail. Nothing else on the invoice moves the total faster.
Service style is 25%. A plated four-course dinner needs one server per ten guests plus a captain. A buffet needs a third of that labor. Stations sit in between.
Venue is 20%. La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, and Del Mar estates require more staffing, longer load-in, and often permits. Downtown venues with a working kitchen cut labor hours.
Rentals, bar, and coastal permits fill the last 15%. A full bar for 150 guests adds $18–$28 per guest. China, linens, and glassware add $22–$40 per guest if your venue doesn't provide them.
What $85, $125, and $175 per guest actually buys
At $85 per guest: a wood-fired BBQ buffet with brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, three sides, cornbread, and full buffet service. Great for 150–300 guests at coastal or backyard venues.
At $125 per guest: family-style with tri-tip, cedar-plank salmon, three shared sides, and a served first course. This is our most-booked San Diego wedding menu.
At $175 per guest: the Steakhouse Experience plated — filet or bone-in ribeye, chef-attended sides, a shared appetizer course, plated dessert. This is the plate people photograph.
Where San Diego couples overspend
Rentals through the venue's preferred list. Independent rental houses in San Diego County run 20–35% less for the same china.
Over-ordering bar. Two beers, two wines, and a signature cocktail cover 90% of San Diego weddings. A full top-shelf bar is a $4,000 line item most guests never touch.
Skipping the tasting. A $200 tasting for 5–7 guests replaces $8,000 of second-guessing. We host tastings Wednesday through Saturday, by appointment only, at our La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe partner kitchens.
